Home Theater On A Budget Using New And Old Crap :-)

2 Home theater on a budget using new and old crap : )What more can I say. Nothing really. I like old vintage gear and find them sounding nice most of the time. I had old stuff laying around so I figured I'd put it to use. I picked up a budget receiver which worked better than I expected. Picked it up due to it having a beefier powr supply section and more output transistors and its ability to be stable at 4ohms. Most budget ones I looked at were not.

I'll be building the sub and using one of my power amps and an electronic crossover I've got. Have built quite a few subs and speakrs so I'm not new to this. Should turn out real nice. Im hoping to hit 20Hz in the room at decent volume levels.

    I’m sort of there. I painted the back wall a dark color. I’m just thinking of what to do about the ceiling which is white. I want to maybe put some light absorbing cloth there too to minimize reflected light. I also have to ceiling mount that projector.

    Have not had any time though to do more but when I do, I will do another vid and I’ll make sure to let you know so you can take a look.

    @slayerfan450

    For sure. As long as the main amp section gets the same voltage.

    I’ve actually been thinking of it the other way :) I’ve got two Orion HCCA amps (old school ones) and I’m thinking of getting a 70A switching power supply because they are not so expensive, can deliver decent current and are not that noisy. I’ll probably tuck it away somewhere and give the amps a nice stable 12-14V from the supply, then use my home preamp to drive them. .

    One more thing, I for awhile I’ve been wondering if you take the power supply out of a car amp and replace it with a power supply out of a home stereo of the same voltages if it would work.
    I thought it would be neat and relatively inexpensive. Just one thing would be, you would have to have a pre-amp.

    @slayerfan450

    I really like them but I’m in Canada and parts express charges me big money for shipping. I buy stuff now from a site called solen. They are not some huge or fancy site but they do carry some good stuff and their customer service is good and they are in canada so it helps :)

    PS I agree with the radioshack statement. They used to be so good ages ago but they pretty much suck these days.

    You must like Parts …
    You must like Parts Express. I’ve bought stuff
    from them and have been very satisfied so far.
    Even tho it was more convenient to go Radio
    Shack. Seems like Radio Shack has nothing
    of my interest any more. My opinion Parts Express
    blows away Radio Shack. So anyhow have a good one.

    @slayerfan450

    Thanks my friend :) I’m really happy with the result and in the end, it was really cheap for everything. The most expensive was the projector (80 percent of the total cost).

    Well its a budget …
    Well its a budget one but I think from what I researched, its no different than the budget sony, pioneer..etc because most of them have the cheaper ones built by an external manufacturer – in this case a company called Orion.

    Its going to be hooked up to my server via gigabit lan. I plan on ripping most of my DVDs to my server whch as 4TB at the moment :)

    Are you going to hook that projector up to a PC with a TV tuner and Windows Media Center/Windows 7? That would make it even more epic.

    Yeah that’s why I’m …
    Yeah that’s why I’m now interested in a projector. It’s comforting knowing I could make myself, lets say, a 72″ screen perhaps, and get a projector for less than an LCD. But you’re lucky to have a basement, they don’t exist where I live. If they did, I’d know where to put it :D

    Its not good in …
    Its not good in lighted rooms but it still fine if I turn on say a desk lamp or a single bulb at the opposite end of the basement…doesnt affect it much but reall, it should be pitch black or near it if possible.

    Basements can be dark of course so for me always wanting a place to watch movies, it made sense to go projector instead of plasma or LCD TV. I can project up to 100″ fine with this Sanyo model but from where I sit, that would be too big so 72″ is more than enough :)

    Woah damn, far out …
    Woah damn, far out of budget >.> The projector actually looks really good. I’ve always thought projectors where kind of lame so I stayed away from them, but this looks really freaking good. How is it in a lighted situation though?

    What can I tell you …
    What can I tell you but the projector was about $800 US dollars and the screen works out to less than $20 in parts and about an hour worth of time painting.

    The fiberboard is actually very light so the screen is held to the wall believe it or not with about 12 drops of hot glue. Its been there for a few weeks. I didnt want to drill into the wall :)
