Is It Possible To Buy Out-of-box Home Audio Speakers?

November 25th, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

I have a few old speaker boxes i made when i was in high school and the speakers i originally put in them (a 12'' sub and a horn in each). These speakers are pretty old and i would like to buy new speakers and replace them to make my home audio system sound better. I have looked everywhere but i cant find where i can buy Home Audio speakers that aren't already installed into a box. Is there anywhere i can buy a home audio speaker without the box so i can install it into the custom boxes i already have?
Thanks!

These two are the largest suppliers and should be able to supply you with everything you need. Both have a large following in the DIY speaker crowd.

Lots of people building their own speakers there.

Yes, there are many places about that sell ‘Chassis Speakers’.

Look at DIY electronics shops such as Maplin, or also car audio suppliers.
    One example link below.

Also check on ebay as prices vary tremendously.

Edit: Remember to fill the back of the speaker box with acoustic wadding (or loft insulation), bare boxes have resonances at various frequencies and can sound nasty.
