Need Some Help With Home Theater Stuff…………..?
I have a DLP HDTV. Haven't bought the receiver yet but basically I like the quality I get from component cables so far so I dont think I'm going to buy a receiver with HDMI capability. I do care for DVDs though so I was going to get an upconverting DVD player, run an HDMI cable from the DVD player to the TV. Everything else (receiver, speakers, etc.) will be connected via component. Does this sound like a good idea? Will the sound and video be off sync?
Well I have a similiar situation. I have my cable box connected via HDMI as well as my upconverting DVD player. HDMI is the highest quality of video availble in the home theater. If you have the ability to have 2 or more connections via HDMI I would go this route. Component cables work as well, though it will be broadcasting an analog signal so some noise could get into the system from that. More often than not you probably wouldnt notice the different. Dont be fooled at the local store that you need to buy the $100 HDMI cable either. It is a digital signal and so the tv just needs to decode the 1 and 0 signal. It isnt like an analog signal where the noise hurts the signal. The $10-20 dollar cables that you can get online are perfect for HDMI and will give you a great picture, plus it will save you money for knowing the different between a digital and an analog signal.

Most newer receivers have a lip sync delay feature that allows you to adjust the audio to perfectly correspond with the video.

Here’s what I did:
I connected my DVD upconvert & cable reciever to my TV via HDMI. Then I connected the same components to my audio reciever via optical digital cable. Picture quality is great and so is the audio. The sound and video are perfectly in sync. I’ve had no problems. From what I have heard and read is that HDMI gives the best video and optical cable gives the best audio.
