The objective of a surround audio process isn't just to offer volume, it's additional concerned with creating a seem field which envelops the listener, generating ambience and providing directionality to some film's noise effects, in other words, creating you feel like you are at the center on the action. In order to generate surround sound, you need multiple speakers (normally 6 or 8), linked to some receiver/amplifier. The most well-known devices use a subwoofer for producing base sounds and 5 smaller speakers for the other channels. Some people believe so-called 7.1 systems (which have two additional rear side channels) develop a more immersive experience; others believe that the extra expense isn't justified.
